Liberal student organization campaigns for out-of-state candidates

Students in a grassroots political organization spent three hours calling voters in Virginia to support a local Democratic candidate at a phone banking event Friday. LA Mayor Garcetti, other officials speak about housing issues at event

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Friday he thinks the city should work with developers to construct more affordable housing as its population increases. Garcetti spoke at the 2017 Mayoral Housing, Transportation and Jobs Summit, where about 100 business owners and representatives listened to Los Angeles officials and business owners talk about ways to create more affordable housing for the city’s growing population and implement more efficient transit systems throughout LA. Lawyers and activists discuss prison health care at law school event

Legal experts and activists said at a symposium Friday they think the United States needs to improve its prisons’ mental and physical health care systems. About a dozen lawyers, academics and activists attended UCLA Law Review Discourse’s first symposium about health care issues in prisons and the long-term physical and psychological consequences of prison life on formerly incarcerated people. Students report issues with on-campus ride-share pickup zone times

Some students said they have had difficulties using Uber or Lyft in campus ride-hailing zones. Uber and Lyft users have had to go to designated zones on campus to request rides since the beginning of fall quarter. Read more...

UCLA survey finds transgender adults face disparities in mental health

ASUCLA to renovate first floor of Ackerman Union, add more seating

Small sections of Ackerman Union’s first-floor dining room will be closed off while they undergo renovations over the next few months. Student Union Director Roy Champawat said Associated Students UCLA is remodeling the dining area’s flooring and seating and expects the renovations to be completed by early winter quarter.
