UC reaches settlement with DOL after underpaying employees

The University of California owes workers $1.3 million following a settlement with the U.S. Department of Labor for underpaying overtime payments for hourly employees. The error occurred while the university was attempting to replace the previous payroll system with the new UC Payroll, Academic Personnel, Timekeeping and Human Resources system. Read more...

Chemistry, biochemistry instructors to provide no-cost course materials

Students taking classes from the chemistry and biochemistry department may start paying less for course materials. Starting fall, the department will require instructors to provide students with no-cost alternatives to course materials and are required to state in their syllabuses whether they profit off the sale of any written course material. Horace Mann UCLA Community School adds ninth-grade class

About 40 students started high school as the inaugural ninth-grade class at the Horace Mann UCLA Community School last week. Horace Mann, which originally taught only sixth to eight grade, added the ninth-grade class as part of a February agreement between the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies and the Los Angeles Unified School District to work together to revitalize Horace Mann Middle School in South Los Angeles, said Christine Shen, director of the UCLA Community Schools Initiative. Westwood Village Improvement Association elects new board secretary

A newly elected secretary for the Westwood Village Improvement Association plans to use her knowledge as a business owner to help improve the Village. The board elected Kifishia Kawachi, who ran unopposed, as the new board secretary at its Thursday meeting. Read more...

New Westwood association member to work closely with landlords

A new member of the Westwood Village Improvement Association said he wants to involve landlords more in the Westwood Village community. The association’s board of directors unanimously appointed John Heidt, owner of Heidt Torres Co., a real estate agency, to occupy a vacant property owner’s seat in Zone 1 of the association’s boundaries at its monthly meeting Thursday Heidt, who has served in various leadership roles in Westwood, such as the board of trustees at Westwood United Methodist Church, said he thinks his ties to community organizations will help him attract successful businesses to the Village.
