Darnell Hunt to fill dean of social sciences position in July

Homeless count increases from 2016 in City of LA, Westwood

Homelessness jumped 20 percent in the City of Los Angeles this year, according to numbers released by an independent agency Wednesday. Los Angeles volunteers counted 34,189 homeless individuals in the city in 2017 compared to 28,464 in 2016, according to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. Read more...

UCLA students are picking up their caps and gowns for graduation, but hundreds did not buy them from the university. Instead, they purchased their graduation gear from SoCal Grad Club, a new student-run business that sells cap and gown packages for 14 dollars less than what the university sells them for. Academic student workers and graduate student researchers represented by the United Auto Workers union recently ended a nearly six-week strike in which they called for better working conditions and equitable wages. The contract stipulates pay increases for all workers – for some, pay increases of up to 80% – as well as anti-harassment policies and increased childcare support. However, the negotiations have struck controversy among some UAW members dissatisfied with the results of the contract. What are your thoughts on this issue? Only the voices of the bargaining team were heard during the negotiation process – the contract is not all-encompassing of student workers and should not have been ratified. The mediation resulted in a realistic contract for academic workers at this time. The agreed-upon result generally covered what the strikers were asking for. I have feelings about this that are not described in the options above. The contract is neither good nor bad and/or this issue does not directly affect me as a student.
