In a study published in Environment International last month, researchers found that methane released in the 2015 Aliso Canyon blowout is linked to higher levels of other hazardous air pollutants in nearby communities such as Porter Ranch and Northridge. Elsevier, which provides access to over 2,500 journals, had been negotiating with the UC’s California Digital Library since early this year to provide UC students and researchers with access to its content. A simple blood sample has led to the discovery that sea otters have low genetic diversity, which may threaten the species’ health in the future. The sample was taken from Gidget, who was a sea otter at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and aided in a UCLA-led study that resulted in the first comprehensive genomic analysis of otters. Read more...
