Researchers find correlation between sedentary behavior and the brain

UCLA researchers found that individuals who spend too much time sitting down may be more likely to have memory impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. In a study published Thursday, researchers at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior examined a group of 35 middle-aged and older adults and found a correlation between increased sedentary behavior and reduced thickness of the medial temporal lobe, a region of the brain critical for memory formation. UCLA Chem-E-Car designs shoebox-sized cars for regional competition

A group of students hope their shoebox-sized car strapped with two Gatorade bottles inches its way to victory at a competition in two weeks. Chem-E-Car is an organization under the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in which students build shoebox-sized cars powered and stopped by chemical reactions. Read more...

UCLA professor heads long-term evolutionary biology project on marmots

Daniel Blumstein’s office is filled with marmot souvenirs, ranging from a “marmot-Xing” sign, to marmot T-shirts and memes, to a casino advertisement featuring a marmot. Blumstein, a UCLA ecology and evolutionary biology professor and head of the Marmot Project of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, studies a range of topics through his research on marmots, including marmot alarm calls, environmental conservation and the evolution of animal behavior. Former UCLA doctor recounts gender discrimination lawsuit against UC Regents

Lauren Pinter-Brown, a former UCLA hematologic oncologist, saw her credibility crumble as soon as she filed a complaint for gender discrimination. “I went to my department (with my complaints), and they referred me to (someone) who made several explicit, gender-biased statements and dropped the five-page statement I had written in a drawer and said, ‘Nobody needs to see this,’” Pinter-Brown said.
