UCLA will now be offering free mental health screenings to all incoming freshmen and transfer students, Chancellor Gene Block announced Thursday. In a speech at the One Mind Initiative at Work summit, a conference on mental health and wellness, Block said that students who choose to participate in the screenings will be examined for various mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety and suicidal tendencies. The University of California’s five cancer research centers will be coordinating their efforts to treat and research the disease. UC President Janet Napolitano and John Stobo, executive vice president of UC Health, announced Monday that cancer research institutions at UCLA, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Diego and UC San Francisco have come together to form the UC Cancer Consortium. Kevin Njabo left Cameroon 15 years ago to pursue teaching and research in environmental science at UCLA. Njabo, an assistant adjunct professor of environmental health sciences, helped establish UCLA’s partnership with the Congo Basin Institute, in which he serves as the Africa director of the Center for Tropical Research.
