UCLA neurosurgeons utilize virtual reality in treating patients

Pediatric neurosurgeon Aria Fallah donned virtual reality goggles and exchanged his surgical tools for two remotes to practice a brain surgery. NASA leader visits UCLA to share findings of Kepler mission

UCLA study shows LGBTQ youth more likely to face violence in custody

A UCLA report found nonheterosexual youth in criminal detention are victims of violence more often than heterosexual youth. The study, published in January, found that nonheterosexual youth are disproportionately incarcerated and are more likely to experience sexual violence and other forms of abuse while incarcerated. Research Recap: Energy-efficient buildings, cancer detection and HIV elimination strategy

March 27 UCLA researchers found that green building certification programs have successfully and significantly improved energy efficiency in large commercial buildings. However, programs such as LEED, Energy Star and the Better Buildings Challenge did not have significant increases in energy savings on smaller buildings. Read more...

University of California to partner with Mexico on energy efficiency research

Researchers from the University of California and Mexican universities will now have access to millions of dollars to collaborate on energy efficiency research projects. In Mexico City on Thursday, UC President Janet Napolitano joined Pedro Joaquín Coldwell, the Mexican Secretary of Energy, to announce a request for proposals that would award up to $10 million to support energy efficiency research. Samueli Foundation donates $20 million to UCLA’s engineering school

Academic student workers and graduate student researchers represented by the United Auto Workers union recently ended a nearly six-week strike in which they called for better working conditions and equitable wages. The contract stipulates pay increases for all workers – for some, pay increases of up to 80% – as well as anti-harassment policies and increased childcare support. However, the negotiations have struck controversy among some UAW members dissatisfied with the results of the contract. What are your thoughts on this issue? Only the voices of the bargaining team were heard during the negotiation process – the contract is not all-encompassing of student workers and should not have been ratified. The mediation resulted in a realistic contract for academic workers at this time. The agreed-upon result generally covered what the strikers were asking for. I have feelings about this that are not described in the options above. The contract is neither good nor bad and/or this issue does not directly affect me as a student.
