Jorge Sincuir donated blood 27 times as a UCLA student, but never fully understood his impact as a donor until he needed a transfusion himself. UCLA Grand Challenge reveals plan for environmental sustainability

The UCLA Sustainable LA Grand Challenge project released a report Wednesday detailing its research plan to make Los Angeles more environmentally sustainable by 2050. The five-year plan outlines goals such as powering Los Angeles County entirely with renewable energy, switching to locally-sourced water supplies and increasing native biodiversity and ecosystem health. UCLA professor Patrick Harran loses nomination as AAAS fellow

The American Association for the Advancement of Science, or AAAS, voted Tuesday to rescind UCLA professor Patrick Harran’s nomination to be a fellow. The association rescinded his nomination after learning the Los Angeles District Attorney filed felony charges in 2011 against Harran, a chemistry and biochemistry professor, for labor code violations that led to the death of one of his lab technicians.
