Student organization coalition files amicus brief supporting lawsuit against Trump

This post was updated Nov. 5 at 1:02 a.m. A coalition of 25 student organizations filed an amicus brief Thursday in support of a lawsuit against President Donald Trump that alleged research funding suspensions to UCLA and subsequent settlement demands violated employees’ free speech.  The student organizations – filing under the name Students for Higher Education – said in the brief that the federal government’s “ruinous cuts to federal research funding,” its $1.2 billion settlement demand and attacks on international students obstruct the constitutionally protected free speech of students and faculty members. UC Investments offers $2.4 billion for stake in new Big Ten entity

UC Investments offered $2.4 billion for a 10% stake in a new entity that would manage the Big Ten’s league-wide media rights and sponsorship deals. The UC said it would use a pension fund to invest in Big Ten Enterprises, which would then direct funds to individual Big Ten schools’ athletic departments, according to ESPN. Read more...

UCLA faculty rally against Trump administration’s settlement demands

The UCLA Faculty Association called on UCLA to preserve academic freedom at a Monday rally following the release of the Trump administration’s settlement demands. Around 40 people attended the noon rally at the bottom of Janss Steps, where professors and doctors gave speeches condemning the Trump administration’s proposed settlement terms publicized Friday. UAW Local 4811 members continue negotiations amid teaching hours being cut

UCLA members of the UC’s largest employee union said their working hours have been cut amid budget uncertainty. United Auto Workers Local 4811, which represents over 48,000 academic and postdoctoral researchers, academic student employees and graduate student researchers across the UC began contract negotiations with the University in July that are expected to run through the end of the year.
