The University Professional and Technical Employees-Communications Workers of America 9119 – which represents researchers and technical workers – and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 – which represents service, patient care and skilled workers – decided to strike in response to the University’s alleged failure to settle for a fair contract. This post was updated Nov. 5 at 1:02 a.m. A coalition of 25 student organizations filed an amicus brief Thursday in support of a lawsuit against President Donald Trump that alleged research funding suspensions to UCLA and subsequent settlement demands violated employees’ free speech. The student organizations – filing under the name Students for Higher Education – said in the brief that the federal government’s “ruinous cuts to federal research funding,” its $1.2 billion settlement demand and attacks on international students obstruct the constitutionally protected free speech of students and faculty members. UC Investments offered $2.4 billion for a 10% stake in a new entity that would manage the Big Ten’s league-wide media rights and sponsorship deals. The UC said it would use a pension fund to invest in Big Ten Enterprises, which would then direct funds to individual Big Ten schools’ athletic departments, according to ESPN. Read more...
