Athlete diversity should be addressed In the submission “Campus needs diversity” (Oct. 14), Rosina Becerra, the associate vice chancellor for the Chancellor’s Office of Faculty Diversity, states that “UCLA, as a major educational institution, is committed to having faculty, staff and students who are reflective of the diverse society in which it exists.” It would be of interest to see evidence of this commitment in the recruitment of athletes for major varsity sports based on the three steps she articulates in her submission, in particular the first step, which calls “to abolish the long-standing belief that “˜cream rises to the top.'” John Hanley Professor emeritus, David Geffen School of Medicine Read more...
