Homogenous faculty a pressing problem

The vote taken by the faculty of the UCLA College last month concerning the diversity requirement should have come as no surprise. Although discussions on diversity have concentrated on the lack of a diversity requirement and the continued decline of students of color attending the University of California’s two flagship campuses, one major component of a diverse campus climate has gone unnoticed, or rather ignored: the lack of faculty diversity. Faculty apathy more of a problem than politics

“Has academia become too liberal?” This was the question posed in an article that appeared in the winter 2004 issue of “UCLA Magazine.” Perhaps in answering this question about our own campus, we should consider the results of the recent faculty vote regarding instituting a “diversity requirement.” Just as the fall quarter was wrapping up, Academic Senate members of the UCLA College rejected the diversity requirement proposal by a margin of 141 to 108.
