UCLA’s young offensive line starting to show signs of maturity

SAN BERNARDINO — Seven offside calls in 60 plays makes for a very unhappy football coach. Such was the case with UCLA football coach Jim Mora both during and after Saturday’s morning practice, in which he saw his defense’s discipline falter in a stretch of plays that Mora described as “not acceptable.” “We’ve got to eliminate all those things from our program,” Mora said. Slimmed-down lineman Ellis McCarthy looks to step up for UCLA football

Defensive lineman Ellis McCarthy is, numerically speaking, a fraction of the man he used to be. After two knee surgeries and a freshman campaign in which he failed to earn consistent reps, the defensive tackle spent extra time with UCLA strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi during the offseason, and the results can have shown in his appearance and athleticism on the field.
