Baseball: Baseball scores win over Wildcats

In a dramatic game typical of competitive Pac-10 baseball, UCLA triumphed over Arizona 9-7, yet again in dramatic come-from-behind fashion. Trailing 6-5 heading into the ninth inning, the Bruins (17-13, 2-2 Pac-10) struck for four, behind a game-tying single by right fielder Matt Thayer, a two-run go-ahead single by first baseman Wes Whisler and an insurance RBI double by center fielder Josh Roenicke. Football: New football coaches weather transition

Following last season’s offensive debacle, when UCLA ranked among the nation’s worst schools in total offense, coach Karl Dorrell cleaned house. During what turned out to be a busy off-season, Dorrell hired offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Tom Cable, quarterbacks coach Jim Svoboda, wide receivers coach Dino Babers and former wide receivers coach Jon Embree will now coach the tight ends. Track: Meet set to revive fan base

Nothing aggravates UCLA distance coach Eric Peterson more than seeing cavernous Drake Stadium littered with empty seats. “It’s a frustrating feeling,” he admits. So Peterson, the meet director for this weekend’s second annual Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational, has taken it upon himself to help revitalize interest in Southern California track and field.
