There were not a lot of positives to take away from the season opener. The defense could not stop anything, allowing six touchdowns and nearly 500 yards of total offense; redshirt sophomore quarterback Nico Iamaleava threw for just 136 yards in his anticipated UCLA debut; and the Rose Bowl – 682 miles from Salt Lake City – teemed with throngs of Utah red, almost matching the size of the Bruin faithful. The Bruins didn’t just take the court in their season opener. They unveiled a brand new identity with six players making their debut. No. 19 UCLA women’s volleyball (1-1) opened the year with mixed results after a five-set thriller win against Long Beach State (1-2) on Monday in Walter Pyramid, followed by a four set loss to Pepperdine (3-1) in Firestone Fieldhouse on Tuesday.
