Walkthrough of the Fowler Yaqui Masks Gallery with Professor David Shorter

“They are one of the only federally recognized native people in Mexico,” said David Shorter, a professor in the UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures, about the native Yaqui people. Shorter has spent several years researching the history and culture behind the Yaqui people. UCLA alumnus Carlos Castaneda played an intricate role in discovering the story behind certain masks of the Yaqui people. These masks are now on display in the UCLA Fowler Museum. Watch as Shorter walks through the entire gallery and describes the significance of the Yaqui masks.


James Kidd Studio featured in ‘Made in LA 2014’

UCLA professor creates nonprofit to help children cope with cancer

On Aug. 5, 2011, doctors told Justin Wilford, a UCLA geography lecturer, what no parent wants to hear­­­. His 4-year-old son, Max, had brain cancer. About two months later, Wilford and his wife, Audra Wilford, founded the MaxLove Project, a nonprofit organization that helps children fighting cancer and other life-threatening conditions. More »
