On April 25, the UC Divest Coalition and Students for Justice in Palestine at UCLA set up around 30 tents to demand that the UC divest from companies associated with the Israeli military. As the war in Gaza passed its 200th day, students and community members began the encampment as part of a national call to action expressing solidarity with the people of Palestine. The encampment was later attacked by counter-protesters and was disbanded by law enforcement May 2. Since then, faculty members have issued statements condemning the use of police force against students, and students have led rallies and sit-ins.

A message to our students: We write today with hearts full of sadness and outrage. Your university administration has failed you. It has failed to protect you and support you, and in doing so, it has made clear where its priorities lie: in silencing protests and maintaining the status quo at the cost of your rights of free speech and assembly.
