Bruins United takes seven of 10 contested offices in USAC election landslide

Bruins United won a majority of the elected seats on the Undergraduate Students Association Council, taking seven of 10 contested positions ““ the largest Bruins United majority since the 2007-2008 school year.

Emily Resnick of Bruins United was elected president with 54.9 percent of the votes, beating Matt Spring of Students First! by almost 10 percent. Both Resnick and Spring are current USAC general representatives.

Joelle Gamble of Students First! was elected external vice president with 50.2 percent, and supported more convenient voter registration throughout her campaign. Kristina Lauren Sidrak of Bruins United won the internal vice president position with 56.7 percent, and promised to work on getting UCLA Gmail accounts for all undergraduates.

Out of 24,463 eligible voters, 38.1 percent voted this year, compared with 35 percent of last year’s 24,892 eligible voters ““ a higher turnout than last year’s elections.

Bruins United held four elected positions on this year’s council, and Students First! held six elected positions on this year’s council. Next year’s council will hold a noticeable shift in slate dominance.

Next year’s general representatives are Bruins United candidates David Bocarsly and Dan Chikanov Students First! candidate Jason Smith. Voters demonstrated a strong preference for Bocarsly, who received 2,281 first-preference votes, in the single transferable system.

Bruins United swept a number of positions, with Raquel Saxe as academic affairs commissioner, Michael Starr as facilities commissioner and Andrea “Andi” Hester as financial supports commissioner. Incumbent Kinnery Shah, representing the Students First! slate, inched past her opponent Ashley Cartwright by 0.4 percent.

In the three uncontested positions, Jamie Yao will be community service commissioner, Tamir Sholklapper will be student welfare commissioner and Daniel Soto will be campus events commissioner.

Newly elected officers will be initiated on May 22.
