Hannah Yip, SWC’s current chief of staff, said she is dedicated to expanding mental health resources directly on Bruin Walk. Yip said she is currently a peer health educator at the Arthur Ashe Student Wellness Center, and added that she provides sexual health resources to students.
Yip also said she has worked with the Disabled Student Union and the Active Minds committee regarding representation and mental health services.
“I’m out there on Bruin Walk every week handing out safer sex supplies, handing out Narcan,” said Yip, a third-year computational and systems biology student. “I know the self advocacy required on our campus, and I firmly believe that no student should have to fight an uphill battle just to have their basic health needs met.”
Johanna Vu, a third-year sociology student, said she wants to make HIV prevention more inclusive. Vu said if elected, she would like to create a partnership with Lavender Health Alliance, LGBTQ Resource Center and Sexperts – a UCLA organization primarily focused on educating Bruins about sexual health according to their website.
Vu also said in community college, she lobbied with basic needs centers and implemented emergency housing programs. She added that she helped implement CalFresh vendor resources and worked with sexual wellness programs on her community college campus.
“In my experience working as a behavioral technician and also under Dr. Shirley Weber’s California Secretary of State Office, I’m reaching out to minoritized student groups across the UC and California public college system,” Vu said.
Students can vote in the election on MyUCLA from 8 a.m. May 9 until noon May 16.
