The Los Angeles Fire Department extinguished a fire on Roebling Avenue around 12:40 a.m. Friday.

As the fire burned, two people called on bystanders to make contributions to the fire, which started around 12:20 a.m. A mattress and a chair were among the items added to the fire.

“All of Roebling, it’s the start of the fall,” one person said to the at least dozen people who stood watching the flames. “Offer new beginnings.”

Billy Joel’s song “We Didn’t Start the Fire” played on a speaker as the fire burned.

UCPD arrived at the scene at 12:33 a.m., and LAFD extinguished the fire shortly after.

Jeffrey Chobanian, the acting captain of UCPD’s operations bureau, said in an emailed statement Friday morning that officers received a report of a fire and used fire extinguishers on the flames upon arrival. No arrests were made, he added in the statement.

Roebling fires have occurred throughout the past few years and sometimes follow UCLA Athletics victories. A fire began on the street in March after UCLA men’s basketball defeated the University of Southern California and LAFD extinguished it after around 40 minutes.
