UCLA student’s nonprofit provides prosthetics for people affected by Syrian war

Haya Kaliounji and her family were forced to flee their hometown in 2012 after a civil war broke out in Syria. After staying in Lebanon for six months, her family moved to the United States on her mother’s work visa in search of a new life in Los Angeles. Read more...

Mentorship organization to build bridges between Bruins, professionals

Children from working-class families invited to UCLA to see opportunities

Maria Mena, a janitor at Santa Monica College, brought her son to UCLA on Saturday to motivate him to pursue higher education. “A lot of kids in our community aren’t motivated to go to college because they don’t think it’s for them, so they don’t go,” she said. Read more...

Professor remembered for developing heritage language learning, dies at 71

Olga Kagan dedicated the last two decades of her life to a community that is often overlooked in language instruction. UCLA professor heads long-term evolutionary biology project on marmots

Daniel Blumstein’s office is filled with marmot souvenirs, ranging from a “marmot-Xing” sign, to marmot T-shirts and memes, to a casino advertisement featuring a marmot. Blumstein, a UCLA ecology and evolutionary biology professor and head of the Marmot Project of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, studies a range of topics through his research on marmots, including marmot alarm calls, environmental conservation and the evolution of animal behavior. City and crime editor Jacob Preal appointed as 2018-2019 editor in chief

The UCLA Communications Board appointed an assistant News editor as the next editor in chief of the Daily Bruin in a meeting Monday night. Jacob Preal, a second-year political science student, was officially appointed after receiving the staff’s endorsement at a hearing Friday night. Read more...
