California voters to decide on criminal justice propositions in November ballot

Two initiatives on November’s ballot aim to shift California’s policies on criminal justice, but with each in a different direction. Proposition 36 would increase some drug and theft crimes from misdemeanors – usually minor crimes punishable by up to a year in jail – to felonies, the most serious type of crime. Read more...

Student, part-time electoral statistician goes to DC to model election predictions

Settlement establishes accessibility consultant for LA County’s voting system

Los Angeles voters with disabilities may see changes to the ways they can cast their vote at polling stations this November. The U.S. Department of Justice reached a settlement agreement with LA County following a lawsuit alleging that the county’s polling centers violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. Read more...

New communication Fiat Lux course examines voting amid ongoing election

As the 2024 presidential election nears, a small group of students gathers in Royce Hall to examine voter turnout. Communication 19: “Voter Participation and Engagement in 2024 Election” – a discussion-based Fiat Lux class offered for the first time this quarter – covers factors influencing voter registration, citizen engagement and polarization in the United States, said Georgia Kernell, the class’s instructor and a former member of the ASUCLA Communications Board, which publishes the Daily Bruin.
