‘Black mold, leaky roofs’: Proposition 2 puts $10B for school repairs on ballot

California voters will decide next Tuesday whether to approve a $10 billion bond for school renovations. If passed, Proposition 2 will allow the state to sell $8.5 billion in bonds to repair K-12 schools and $1.5 billion in bonds to improve community college campuses, said Steven Brint, a distinguished professor of public policy and sociology at UC Riverside. Uniqlo founder gives $31M to UCLA to fund study of Japanese humanities

Japan’s richest man donated $31 million to the study of Japanese humanities at UCLA on Oct. 3. Tadashi Yanai, the president of Japanese retail company Fast Retailing – the parent company of clothing company Uniqlo – committed the donation to the Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities. Faculty, students sue UC over violating protester rights in spring encampment

Two students and two faculty members filed a lawsuit against the UC on Tuesday, alleging the University has unfairly repressed pro-Palestine protests.  The lawsuit – filed by attorneys from the Southern California chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union – alleges the University violated the rights of protesters who participated in the spring Palestine Solidarity Encampment at UCLA. California lawmakers reintroduce Basic Assistance for Students in College Act

Two Democratic Californian legislators reintroduced a bill designed to target the basic needs crisis among students in higher education Sept. 18. The Basic Assistance for Students in College Act – which Democrats first introduced in June 2021 – would create a $1 billion grant program for higher education institutions to provide funds for research and address food, housing, health care, child care, technology and transportation needs, according to a press release from Senator Alex Padilla, one of the people who introduced the bill.
