A closer look: Donor outcry minimal so far

The recent scandal at UCLA involving the sale of body parts from donated cadavers is worrisome for similar programs throughout the country. “Donor programs across the nation are contingent on public trust, and when public trust is violated, there is the potential for (willed body) programs to be affected,” said Kristin Liles, director of anatomical resources at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Students lament misuse of bodies

From the first day of gross anatomy lab, UCLA medical students are taught to respect the cadavers they are about to dissect. The March 7 arrest of Henry Reid, the director of UCLA’s Willed Body Program, for the alleged selling of donated body parts, has upset many medical students in its contradiction to the principles they are taught.
