UCLA faculty help develop list of ethical principles for intracranial research

UCLA ethicists and neuroscientists recently collaborated with other researchers across the country to create a list of principles for ethical invasive brain research. Intracranial research uses invasive techniques inside the skull in order to answer fundamental questions about the brain and help provide treatments to patients with brain disorders that are untreatable with traditional methods, experts said. UCLA medical school faculty allege racially biased practices in psychiatry department

Faculty of color in the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences said they experienced and observed racial discrimination in various instances, including being passed over for promotions, ignored in decision-making and discouraged in efforts to hire more faculty of color. UCLA researchers use stem cells to work toward refining cancer-fighting technology

UCLA researchers have developed a way to genetically engineer cells to create a potentially more cost-effective treatment for cancer. In the Nov. 16 study, researchers created a method of growing cancer-fighting cells to refine immunotherapy – an alternative to chemotherapy that helps mobilize the patient’s immune system to kill cancer cells, according to the American Cancer Society.
