NWWNC has two weeks to approve grants for local organizations before election

North Westwood organizations have less than two weeks left to potentially receive a neighborhood purpose grant from the current council. Neighborhood purpose grants, which are grants given by neighborhood councils to benefit community organizations, can be issued in amounts up to $5,000 to eligible organizations, such as approved nonprofit organizations and public schools that lie within the boundaries of their respective councils. Westwood has seen nightlife shuttered by local competition, city regulations

Westwood has always faced legal hurdles to expanding its nightlife scene and providing students entertainment after 10 p.m. Organizations like the North Westwood Neighborhood Council have supported the establishment of businesses in Westwood to improve the nightlife scene – such as Rocco’s Tavern and Broxton Brewery – to serve customers from dinnertime onward. Document shows three people account for majority of property appeals in Westwood

Nearly two-thirds of appeals against Westwood businesses and properties in the last 20 years were made by the same three community members. A document compiled by the Los Angeles Department of City Planning listed 72 appeals made since 1998. Read more...
