Coach John Frazier’s shot put teams have been on a tear this year. His most senior throwers – redshirt senior Nicholas Scarvelis and redshirt junior Torie Owers – posted huge personal bests against Texas A&M last weekend to claim the first and third farthest throws in the nation this season for their respective genders. Senior Catherine Harrison described herself as having “flown blind” through last year’s Pac-12 singles championship. Harrison, currently the No. 17 player in the nation, primarily played in the fifth singles spot last season, leading her to have little experience against the stiff competition she would face in the tournament. UCLA beach volleyball has been on a roll, and it’s no coincidence. “I gotta hand it to the athletes, they’ve been really focused on improving and getting better,” said coach Stein Metzger following UCLA’s eighth consecutive win of the season against Long Beach State on April 13. Read more...
