GSA leaders oppose new tax bill, claim it will harm graduate students

Graduate student leaders are lobbying against a federal tax bill they say would discourage students from pursuing doctoral degrees. A Republican bill passed by the House of Representatives last week treats graduate students’ waived tuition as taxable income, so graduate students will have to pay taxes on income they do not actually earn. UCLA researchers find potential problems in federal hospital program

A national program to reduce rehospitalizations may have increased death rates for heart failure patients, researchers reported Nov. 12. A study published in the medical journal JAMA Cardiology found heart failure mortality rates increased during the federal Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program, which incentivizes hospitals to avoid excessively hospitalizing patients within 30 days of their previous hospitalization. Experts say marijuana taxes unlikely to weed out customers

New marijuana taxes that go into effect January may increase prices, but probably will not reduce marijuana consumption, said several policy experts and dispensary staff. California voters approved Proposition 64 in November 2016, allowing residents over the age of 21 to possess up to one ounce of marijuana and grow up to six plants. Read more...
